UN Secretary-General expresses concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, Sudan

Thursday, February 7, 2008

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has expressed concern about crises in Chad, Kenya, and the Sudan. The U.N. chief is recently back from Africa where he attended the African Union summit in Ethiopia and met with leaders in Kenya.

On rebel efforts to overthrow the government in Chad in recent days, the secretary-general welcomed an African Union initiative to have the leaders of Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo mediate the crisis. He says the United Nations will do its utmost to help resolve the crisis, urging the Security Council to act swiftly to help bring an end to the violence.

“It has devastating consequences not only for the people of Chad and Darfurian refugees seeking shelter there, but also for Darfur itself,” said Ban.

Mr. Ban told reporters the situation in the neighboring Darfur region of Sudan is no less troubling. He says the deployment of the AU-U.N. peacekeeping force, known as UNAMID, must be sped up and urged member states to properly equip the troops.

“UNAMID still lacks required aviation and ground transportation – chiefly helicopters. Additional troops will not make up for this shortfall,” said Ban. “Those countries that called for intervention in Darfur are under special obligation to deliver on their promises.”

While at the AU summit, Mr. Ban says he discussed some of the outstanding issues affecting the deployment with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, and he expects the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to be signed this week. But Mr. Ban remained vague on whether some of the agreement’s sticking points – such as night flights, land agreements, and advance notice of U.N. movements – had been settled.

On Kenya, Mr. Ban says he has been deeply engaged in the post-election crisis and told political leaders during his visit there that they bear particular responsibility for the future of Kenya.

“I stressed to all the Kenyan leaders the need to stop the unacceptable violence and killings, and to resolve their differences through dialogue and democratic process. I also appealed to all the political leaders to think beyond their individual interests or party lines and to look to the future of Kenya as one country,” he said.

Mr. Ban also met in Nairobi with his U.N. predecessor, Kofi Annan, who is leading the panel of eminent Africans trying to mediate the crisis, and said they discussed his roadmap for the talks.

Security of U.N. personnel in Africa and elsewhere has been high on the secretary-general’s agenda, especially in the wake of the December bombing in Algeria that killed 17 staff members. Mr. Ban announced that he is naming diplomat Lakhdar Brahimi to chair an independent panel on safety and security of U.N. personnel and premises. Brahimi is an Algerian, but Mr. Ban says he has no concerns about his fairness or objectivity in heading up the panel.

Senior Telegraph writer Peter Oborne alleges paper suppressed reports on HSBC

Thursday, February 19, 2015

Peter Oborne, former chief political commentator at British broadsheet newspaper the Daily Telegraph, has alleged the paper suppressed and under-reported stories involving banking giant HSBC so as to avoid a loss of advertising revenue. In a public resignation from the paper published on the openDemocracy website on Tuesday, the veteran journalist and columnist alleges the division between advertising and editorial had not been kept watertight and that editors were committing a form of “fraud” on readers of the newspaper.

In Oborne’s article, he details how he submitted a story to the Telegraph regarding HSBC closing a number of prominent British Muslims’s accounts — despite assurances to the contrary, the story was not published by the paper. This led to Oborne investigating other coverage of HSBC in the newspaper. He cites the example of a story written by the Telegraph banking correspondent Harry Wilson on problems with HSBC’s accounts, which Oborne claims was quietly removed from the Telegraph website. Oborne says the failure of the Telegraph to cover HSBC is also present in the relative coverage given in November 2014 after the bank had to allocate a fund of £1 billion to compensate customers, as well as an investigation into manipulation of the currency market: Oborne argues these developments were given considerable coverage in competing newspapers including the Guardian, Times, and Mail but the Telegraph covered them only briefly several pages into the business section.

Oborne’s article alleges a number of other examples of suppression — calling the coverage of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong “bizarre”, and noting that the paper under-reported news of false accounting at Tesco but gave significant prominence to stories about the company without a critical edge.

Following Oborne’s article, a spokesman for the Telegraph responded: “Like any other business, we never comment on individual commercial relationships, but our policy is absolutely clear. We aim to provide all our commercial partners with a range of advertising solutions, but the distinction between advertising and our award-winning editorial operation has always been fundamental to our business. We utterly refute any allegation to the contrary. It is a matter of huge regret that Peter Oborne, for nearly five years a contributor to the Telegraph, should have launched such an astonishing and unfounded attack, full of inaccuracy and innuendo, on his own paper.”

Media commentator Roy Greenslade, writing for the Guardian, described Oborne’s allegations against the Telegraph as “dynamite” and said they go “to the heart of a paper’s credibility”. The Barclay brothers, owners of the Telegraph, “are being held to account”, according to Greenslade, and Oborne “has shone a light on a dark reality”.

Creating Handmade Quilts Design Is An Artist Innovation}

Creating Handmade Quilts Design Is an Artist Innovation

by

Merlina Naldo

Creating handmade Quilt designs done is an innovation. The ability to weave a quilt with ones owns hand is nothing other than a brilliant talent. Handmade quilts which have fascinated people for over centuries have been charmed people for centuries. With demand for hand woven quilts rising every year the art has become all the more exclusive and valuable.

The artists and weavers are producing quilts in greater numbers and in better designs now to cope up with the increased demand. The new age artists are mixing to put in the contemporary look in a better way. Traditionally, handmade quilts were made from natural fibers like wool, cotton, rayon and silk. These fibers were subject to deterioration in quality after repeated use over years; the mixed fibers are better options, that way too. The handmade quilts generally take many days to be made and hence are costlier. On the other hand, the number of talented quilt artists is on the decreasing side and that is another reason the art is turning rare and the price is enhancing to a level, where they are becoming priceless and gradually a collector’s piece.

These weaknesses caused due to the traditional fibers are gradually been covered up by the artificial fibers. Artificial fibers being synthetically produced could be of varying colors and textures. Supply could be made as per demand so that wastage or scarcities are prevented. Being of a tougher texture these fibers are more easily used in weaving and knitting machines.

Mixing and matching of fibers has helped to create innumerable varieties of quilt designs. These longer lasting quilts are in great demand across countries and communities. Apart form the texture the patterns and designs are innumerable and striking. Exclusivity has become customary with these quilt designers. Amazing combination in wool, silk and nylon fibers in a range of colors have created waves in quilt variations. Some finished with embroidered motifs or laced floral designs create a timeless appeal to these designer quilts.

Many designers make prototypes of daily life scenes or festivals on quilts. These quilts look much more attractive in different shades. Festival quilts are sold in large numbers during festivities and special occasions. These come at a comparatively higher price because of its intricacies and conceptual designs. Designer quilts are gradually becoming popular among buyers. These made to order designs done with extra care and to its finest level.

Exclusivity has become an underlining criterion among quilt makers. Handmade quilts are often made from fibers colored with natural dyes. This is crucial in protecting environment. They are market with great hand crafted varieties and are trusted for their creativity and craftsmanship. The cheaper machine made variety can hardly compete with them.

Either way, the buyer is the greatest profiteer in this bargain. With hand woven designs and patterns the choice is wide for a buyer. Quilt designs form an art form and always looked upon with great regard.

Quilt designs have never before been such an interesting field of study and innovation. The handloom weavers are experimenting in their own ways to create amazing designs to please customers.

How To Market With Niche Auction Sites}

Submitted by: Diana Barnum

Online auctions are big business. But they can be big headaches.

During the past year, trading in online commerce was valued at $60 billion, according to *Business Standard.” Online trade among small businesses makes up 1 per cent of USA*s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and is expected to reach 10 per cent or $400 billion of USA*s GDP by 2010.

“But setting up and maintaining operations on huge auction sites like eBay is not always easy,” said Rich Moc, owner of Performance Cars at Pcars(dot)com, a niche automotive auction site. “People can spend a lot of time sifting through cluttered pages of auctions, bidding, setting up accounts and managing multiple, confusing and expensive fees that can take an accountant to figure out. And trying to figure out how to submit a simple email or place a quick call for help can be a pain in the neck.”

The solution or pain relief for big auction headaches? Smaller, niche sites with personalized service. For example, Performance Cars offers easier management, one-on-one help and plenty of options to help with automotive solutions and aftermarket selling. Some of their auction tips are:

Customer Service – When you have an item listed and a potential buyer contacts you with a question, respond quickly. It is important and actually critical to your success to check your email account several times a day. Answering a question could be the difference between you getting the sale or the buyer going someplace else.

Description – When you list your item(s), write an accurate description. No need to write long paragraphs of rambling information. But do provide exact measurements, colors, condition, etc. Be precise.

Exceed Expectations – You want every customer to be happy. So do a little more research on shipping, or negotiate on price. But remember that the customer is the reason you will have success. Be prepared to go the extra mile and provide superior service every time.

Digital Images – While auctions without photographs can and do sell, auctions with photographs sell much better. People like visualizations and want to see what they will get with their money. Make sure your photograph is clear, focused and offers more than just a straight view.

With Pcars(dot)com, sellers can instantly create their own account and setup their own homepage. Next they add their product information and links. Then upload images, up to eight photos included with the no-cost membership. That*s it.

“It is THE BEST site to host photos and one of the best to sell and buy things for your car!” shared Lefteris from Greece who sells Jewels for Porsches regularly on Ebay and now on Pcars(dot)com, too. “And the site is very easy to use.”

The site is developing to meet needs of the buyers and sellers. In the works are Photo Gallery for hosting pictures, AV Center for racing videos, and a Forum for comments and sharing automotive tips.

“As a seller I find the PCARS site very easy to list and I like that I can have large photos for my items,” Lefteris explained. “I use eBay also, but I find the PCARS site much, much better. I*m here to stay.”

Progressing Discount Price Plan

Also under way is a new Progressing Discount Price (PDP) plan. Sellers will have the option to list their prices so that they decrease over time, while waiting for someone to buy. This option benefits the sellers by allowing them to discount their inventories as time progresses. Additionally, this ensures that inventories may get sold at the end of the listing period (usually 30-day). The benefit for the buyers is that they get to buy the items cheaper the next day if the items have not been sold.

Kenyan TV and newspaper raided by masked police

Thursday, March 2, 2006

The offices of Kenya’s second largest TV and newspaper companies were raided simultaneously this morning by groups of masked police officers. The TV station was taken off the air for 13 hours, and the newspaper’s press was damaged and its uncirculated copies burned. The Kenyan government is characterizing the incident as an evidence-gathering step of a national security investigation, in response to the paper and station’s recent alleged publishing of false material to incite ethnic hatred and instability.

The Standard, Kenya’s oldest daily newspaper, and the Kenya Television Network (KTN), the paper’s sister TV station, were the targets of the raid. The company that owns both outlets is the second largest media source in the country. The raid marks the first time the Kenyan government has shut down a major media outlet, and punctuates a period of increased media freedom in Kenya.

The CEO of The Standard, Tom Mshindi, has reported that his staff was “roughed up” and intimidated during the raid. The raiders, wearing gas masks and driving unmarked vehicles, did not have a warrant and did not identify themselves as police, but a Standard staffer recognized the voice of a police commander among the raiding party. Later at a press conference, Internal Security Minister John Michuki acknowledged the raid occurred as part of a “state security” investigation.

On Tuesday, February 28, three reporters from The Standard were arrested for publishing stories Saturday about an alleged secret meeting between Kenyan president Mwai Kibaki, and minister for the environment and deposed former foreign minister Kalonzo Musyoka, who has become an opposition figure to the president’s policies, to resolve differences. Both Kibaki and Musyoka have denied having any such meeting.

The journalists are charged with “publishing false rumor with intent to cause alarm to the public”, and have pleaded not guilty. The three were released on bail after their arraignment today.

Musyoka has expressed dismay at the government’s actions, pointing out that there are standard legal recourses to such media actions that should be used, rather than a police attack.

KTN and The Standard have been increasingly critical of the president, who is seen by many as losing touch with the country.

The Standard was able to repair presses and produced a special edition late in the day. KTN also returned to the air in the afternoon, showing footage of the Standard raid. Both outlets reportedly had equipment removed or damaged during the raids, including computers, security cameras, and a backup power supply.

MT duo & Robot Taiwan 2008: Vast opportunities for machinery industry

Friday, May 2, 2008

The 2008 Taipei CNC Machine Tools & Manufacturing Technology Show (MT duo) and Taiwan International Robot Exhibition (Robot Taiwan 2008) both began yesterday. These events are both taking place in the build up to Taipei International Machine Tool Show (TIMTOS 2009) at TWTC Nangang, which is due to take place next year.

The 2008 MT duo and Robot Taiwan mainly focused on software designed for industry, rather than consumers. This is in contrast to the choice of software displayed in many Japanese Trade Shows, which often displays products designed for consumers.

Robotics is a major industry in Taiwan. As a result the organizer of the event decided to refine “Manufacturing Taipei” and split it into the “Robot & Industrial Automation” of Manufacturing Taipei and “Robot Taiwan”.

There was also a “Taiwan International Robotics Forum” and “Seminars on MT duo” at the event. Both were designed to attract executives from IT, manufacturing, and machinery industries to promote the worldwide use of robotics in industry.

Conservatives win Newark by-election

Friday, June 6, 2014

The Conservative Party has won the Newark, England by-election but with a reduced majority. Voters gave 45.03% of the vote to Robert Jenrick, while the UK Independence Party candidate Roger Helmer came second with 25.91% of the vote. The turnout was 38,707, 52.67% of the electorate of 73,486.

The by-election was called following the resignation of Patrick Mercer after it was revealed he was paid to lobby and ask questions in Parliament on behalf of the country of Fiji in an investigation by the BBC Panorama programme.

Jenrick is a 32-year-old who works as managing director of Christie’s auction house. After the election result was announced, he said: “I want to thank the prime minister for his personal support to my campaign and I want to thank the government for its commitment to re-building Britain. I hope now that I can repay the faith and trust that the people of Newark have put in me as your new member of parliament — and in the months and years to come I can build a reputation as a strong and effective MP.”

UKIP’s candidate, Roger Helmer, attracted controversy during the election campaign due to past public statements about the acceptability of homosexuality. In remarks to The Sun newspaper, he compared considering homosexuality “distasteful if not viscerally repugnant” to tea preferences. He explained: “Different people may have different tastes. You may tell me that you don’t like Earl Grey tea. That may be a minority view but you are entitled not to like it if you don’t like it.” Helmer later stated the manner in which his comments were reported showed “the mainstream media are engaged in a feeding frenzy against UKIP, and are prepared to twist the facts to suit their agenda”.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the party had run a “stunning campaign”: “We’ve been up against probably the biggest ever Conservative machine, defending about their 40th safest seat in the country. If the indications are right, we’ll be celebrating a massive advance for our party.”

The Liberal Democrat candidate, David Watts, said coming in sixth place “wasn’t a good result, but smaller parties often get squeezed in by-elections and that’s what’s happened to us here”. He said the independent campaign by Paul Baggaley had got a lot of support, and “a lot of our voters had transferred to vote against UKIP to make sure UKIP didn’t get elected”.

Grant Shapps from the Conservative Party said the surge of support for UKIP after the European elections was now “going backwards”, while Nigel Farage said Conservative MPs in more marginal seats would be filled with “sheer horror” at UKIP’s success.

Newark by-election results

Buying Quality Cuisinart Stainless Steel Cookware}

Buying Quality Cuisinart Stainless Steel Cookware

by

Vance Kadasian

There are some top companies on the market today in the stainless steel cookware sector. Cuisinart is one of these companies as is All-Clad stainless steel cookware. Each of these companies prides itself in creating cookware products that will stand the test of time as well as the test of the pickiest kitchens. The Cuisinart stainless steel cookware sets will usually cost from two hundred fifty dollars to the high price of four hundred dollars in the Chef’s Classic sets that they have. The Cuisinart brand of stainless steel cookware can be found in some department stores that also sell kitchenware such as Macy’s. There are many different styles that can be found in this brand of cookware so that the style of the kitchen can be matched as well as the uses that the chef wants to have in his cookware.

Choices

The top of the line Cuisinart stainless steel cookware set costs about four hundred dollars but it has many qualities that the lesser sets do not have. This set has an eight and ten inch skillet so that a wide variety of dishes can be prepared, including crepes and omelets. There is also a one and a half and a three quart covered saucepan in the set in addition to a three and a half quart saut pan with a helper handle. To top off the set, there is an eight quart stock pot that comes with a lid.

Many of the lesser brands of cookware will not give a whole lot of thought to the lids that are used. With the Cuisinart stainless steel cookware sets, the lids are clear, made from glass so that the interior of the pot can be seen throughout the cooking process. The lids also fit tightly with a seal so that the flavors are locked in while cooking. These pots and pans can also be used in the oven up to five hundred fifty degrees in the top sets. this is about one hundred fifty degrees higher than cheaper cookware sets can handle if they are oven safe. In addition, the Cuisinart stainless steel cookware sets are made to be able to go into the dishwasher for easy cleanup. They can also be used as storage, since they are safe to put in the refrigerator and also in the freezer when needed.

Thought is also put into the shape of the rims of the Cuisinart stainless steel cookware sets. The rims are made so that the materials in the pot can easily be poured without dripping since they are tapered.

Illegal drug found to be used in the manufacture of toys

Wednesday, November 7, 2007

Bindeez beads, a children’s toy from Australia and manufactured by Moose Enterprise in Hong Kong, is being pulled off toy store shelves in the United Kingdom after traces of an illegal drug, which is converted into gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid (GHB) when ingested, was found inside the toy. At least 20 million toys are affected.

So far at least three children from the U.K. and at least two from Auckland, New Zealand have fallen seriously ill and are currently receiving medical attention. The toy is also sold in the United States as Aqua Dots, with two reports received by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of children needing hospitalization after ingesting the beads.

“We’ve asked all our customers to take them off the shelf while we retest everything to make sure the toys comply with all regulations,” said the company in a statement, although no mandatory recall has been issued for the product. The statement also says that the plant in Hong Kong was not using a chemical mixture approved by the company.

“This substitution was not at any time approved by Moose nor was Moose made aware of any substitution by the supplier,” added the statement.

The toys were supposed to contain a non-toxic chemical known as 1,5-pentanediol, but instead 1,4-butanediol, which is mainly used in creating the illegal drug GHB, was used in the toys. When humans consume 1,4-butanediol, the body converts it into GHB and could make the individual seriously ill, causing headaches, seizures, dizziness and in some cases death. GHB is a natural chemical found in a variety of things such as beef, wine and some varieties of citrus fruits. It is also used as a pharmaceutical which is sold as Xyrem.

Recent animal research indicates that drugs are available for human use which may work as antidotes to the poison, either by hindering its conversion to GHB with 4-methylpyrazole (fomepizole, Antizol) or by blocking GHB’s effectiveness at the receptor (SCH 50911). Rodent testing has found the lethal dose of 1,4-butanediol to range from 1.4 to 2.5 grams per kilogram body weight, but an antidote can increase the lethal dose by a factor of 10.

It is not known how the chemicals got mixed up, but officials for the toy company say that they are continuing the investigation. The toy is currently banned in all of Australia, but the company says all those who bought it will be refunded their money.

“The issue of how a dangerous substance was used in these beads and not the non-toxic substance … that is going to take us a few more days to uncover,” said Australia’s Fair Trade Minister, Linda Burney in a statement to the press.

The toy was recently named Australia’s number one toy for 2007.
