Tips For Violin Teachers: How To Find Resources For Your Lessons

Submitted by: Serena C. Yeo

Violin teachers always need to have ready and credible materials to use during their classes. A teacher should never come to a classroom without having proper materials and knowledge about the subject he or she will be teaching. As a violin teacher, you always need to show your credibility and expertise in the lessons you are teaching. It is easier to teach if you are working in a violin school, as resources will be made available to you. What you need to do primarily is review the lessons you will be teaching your students.

However, additional materials can help widen your knowledge and the subject matter you teach to your students. Moreover, if you are teaching as a freelance teacher, you need to constantly update your knowledge to be competitive in the industry.

Violin Lessons

The lessons you took previously are important part of you being a teacher. Your notes and stock knowledge will help you now as teacher. If you want to continuously develop your knowledge in violin-playing, you can also take refresher lessons to remember the basics of violin. If you have been playing the violin for quite a long time, and have taken advanced lessons, you might have forgotten terms and concepts for beginner students.

Music Sheets and Books

As a teacher, it is required that you have the right resources to distribute among your students. Music sheets serve as their reference during lessons and practice. Even during recitals, music sheets are important reference material for students. Find compositions and musical pieces that are easier if you are teaching beginner students.

Aside from using books as your reference during violin lessons, you can also recommend these as reading materials for your students. When looking for a good book on violin playing, you also need to consider the skill level of your students. You won’t have to recommend books for beginners if you are already teaching advanced students.

DVDs and other Pre-recorded Materials

There are a lot of DVDs available for various students which they can use on their own. However, not all students can learn the violin solely with the help of pre-recorded audio visual materials. If they get confused with some techniques, they still need the guidance of violin teachers to explain these concepts.

If you want to show some sample techniques you can play videos during the class. You can also use these materials as your personal reference to learn new techniques during classes.

The Internet

The Internet is an accessible source of information. Anyone can use it to learn almost anything. Some violin students even attempt self study by going online. However, one who uses the Internet must have discretion. There are a lot of websites and blogs that offer information, but not all of them are reliable.

As a teacher you must not consider the Internet as your enemy, rather an instrument you can use to further help your students. During violin lessons, you can suggest helpful and informative websites and blogs which they can use as extra source of information for their journey as a violin player.
